Don't You Wanna Be More Than Friends

March. A time usually centered around my birthday, but this year it was also centered around concerts. The Estelle concert had a different vibe than what I usually expected from a concert. The venue, The Vogue Theatre just set it off. An intimate and chill environment, which wasn't exactly GM Place where most of the concerts I've been to have been held. There was no millions of screaming fans or crappy balcony seats or big television screens to see the performer. It was a new atmosphere, something that I could get use to. But I have to admit, I only did buy tickets for the opening act which sadly failed, but to my surprise it was actually a really good show. Estelle.. how to describe her - chill, amazing singer, amazing voice, opening up her life through her songs. Even though I didn't know all her songs or the lyrics so I could sing along.. I realized it wasn't about knowing the words or naming the title, it was about soaking in the atmosphere and being saturated with the jazzy ambiance watching someone that was born to be on that stage. The concert gave me a different outlook on shows and why people go.
En Vogue. R&B legends, complete with all four members took the stage at Riverock. The ladies did 90's music lovers proud. Being in their presence and listening to their voices made me feel as if it wasn't 2009. It was as if we went to back to past where songs like "my lovin" and "whatt man" topped the charts. Although the ladies have aged and changed, they still sounded fabulous. It was amazing to see a group that I considered made an impact on R&B music, but also that they honoured their idols including the emotions, marvin gaye and aretha franklin. It was breath-taking to watch a group honour musicians of the past. Their old school medley was one of the highlights of the night. But, the most memorable part of the night was when the band started to play the intro of "don't let go" and then my concert buddy & I ran down the stairs to the stage singing our hearts out while touching the hands of dawn, cindy, maxine and terry. It was amazing! Most definitely the highlight of the night. I remember when it sadly was all over, I just couldn't comprehend what just happened, it was definitely a moment hard to describe. The night was spectacular.. good company, beautiful theatre, amazing group, a throwback to the past.. it was definitely worth every penny. This past month India Arie and Raphael Saadiq would have made March the concert month of all time, but I think I am beyond satisfied having watched Estelle and En Vogue.. till the next concert!
